Fast Times at Beta Theta Pi

The Rookies and I post-MNO

“Rookie Week” came to a successful close Thursday night after more than a week of mild conditions.  Junior William Kragie took the big “W” in Rookie Miss ‘n Out after making quick work of his quarter- and semifinal heats, while Freshman Chris Craig was impressive as well coming in 4th.  Had Sophomore Jacob Gorgol not had class, I’m confident we would have seen even more success out of our young guns.  BVN even gave us some love.  Needless to say, we’re feeling confident in our team’s strength as our attention now turns solely to the track.

The weather in Bloomington has been absolutely incredible and we’ve been able to get some long, hard rides in over the course of the last month.  More importantly, thanks to a Bloomington winter that saw very little freeze/thaw action, the track is in pristine condition and we’re ready to throw down some fast efforts from here on out.  I was able to get out there for a bit on Friday night and am feeling extremely good despite taking almost a month off to nurse a knee injury.  All 6 of us will be out there tonight and are excited to get some testing done to see how we stack up against not only last year’s times but also those of our teammates.  In years past we’ve only been 3 or 4 deep but it’s obvious this year that those “final 4” race-day spots are within everyone’s reach.

We’ve also had some time to iron out our race plans for the next 2 months.  There’s a chance we’ll make the trek to Mizzou this weekend, but dates we have pretty much set in stone are:

3/10: Carondelicious Criterium (St. Louis, MO)
3/11: The Great Forest Park Bicycle Race (St. Louis, MO)
3/17: Long Run Circuit Race (Louisville, KY)
3/24: Quals (Bloomington, IN)
3/25: Lexington Circuit Race (Lexington, KY)
3/28: ITT’s (Bloomington, IN)
3/31: Miss ‘n Out (Bloomington, IN)
4/7: Marian (Indianapolis, IN)
4/14: Team Pursuit (Bloomington, IN)
4/21: The Little 500 (Bloomington, IN)

It’s always good to get some racing miles in to test the legs and also work on general race tactics, so we’re pumped to tackle some of these early-season criteriums.  The posts will be much more frequent from here forward, so be sure to stay tuned to this site and follow us on Twitter @BetaCycling
